Joanie Mackowski at Partners Village Store and Michael Zack at Baker Books

While Whaling City Review will not be hosting an open mic in July, we wanted to pass on information about some upcoming poetry events in the area:

Joanie Mackowski will read at Partners Village Store on Thursday, July 29, at 5:30 pm. Joanie’s second book, View from a Temporary Window, has just been published by the Pitt Poetry Series. Her first book, The Zoo, won the Kate Tufts Award from the Claremont Graduate School. Her work has appeared in Poetry and The Yale Review.

On Saturday, July 24th at 10:30 AM, Baker Books is pleased to welcome poet Michael Zack, M.D. Dr. Zack will read and share some insights as a poetry editor (of CHEST, the Journal of the American College of Chest Physicians) about secrets for successful poetry submissions. A resident of South Dartmouth, he has published several hundred poems and several poetry books, and was the winner of the Anamnesis Poetry Competition.

Also, Whaling City Review’s Maggie Cleveland will be leading a free 8-week poetry workshop at the George Hail Library in Warren, RI, starting tonight (Thursday, July 8th) from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. There is still time to sign up, or drop in to check it out if you’d like. More information and an online registration link can be found at – or send an email to

Hope to see you there!
